“Wind Beneath my Wings” & Painting on a Guitar

Today’s guitar adventure is all about using a capo, more about that in a bit. First, I want to bring attention to that little guitar on the floor to the left of me in the above video (I’ll also include a photo later in this post). That’s the next instrument I plan to paint on, inspired by the lyrics of this song, so you can probably guess what the design might look like. OK back to guitar practice… A capo has many uses, but what I’m talking about is how beginners like me can try out more challenging songs that I wouldn’t be able to play otherwise.

Unfortunately the cuff of my jacket snagged on the capo and I didn’t realize it was knocked out of alignment, lol! Oh well, that’s OK, the capo still did a decent job of staying in place. But if you noticed that I don’t have it positioned straight, that’s why. Anyway, for this more advanced song, “Wind Beneath my Wings”, I’m still only playing beginner level chords, but with the capo I get the chance to try out more complicated dynamics, rhythm, and strumming patterns. At times it seems like my guitar is fighting against the song because I’m struggling a bit to keep things running smoothly, but I’m still loving every minute of it and my guitar playing is improving!

If you are on this journey with me, I hope you are sticking with it. I have one more note about using a capo: in my experience, I found that it was better not to move on to advanced songs via capo until I first felt very comfortable with simple chord arrangements withOUT a capo. It takes a while to get used to the capo being “in the way”, at least it felt like that for me (and still does, but not as much as it did at first). Since I prefer to play without a capo, there’s incentive to master more complicated chords! Meanwhile, it’s great fun to be able to dabble with a greater selection of songs!

Below is a photo of the guitar that I’ll be painting on for my next project. It’s a used guitar, a little beat up, but it’s cute and I know the design will be lovely on it. Can you guess what I will be painting, based on the song in the video at the top of this blog post?

Can you believe that April is almost over? The weather is surely spring like for most of you, I’d think so – at least if you live in the United States. Here in the deep South, we have wildfires to worry about. In Savannah, Georgia we are safe so far, but we saw some ash falling from the sky, so the fires are impacting our area. It’s very dry here. We are hoping that the chance of rain late tonight comes through!

Until next time, may the Lord bless you and keep you, may His face shine upon you, and give you peace.
