Today’s guitar practice focuses on three different skills. Because this easy beginner version of “Lord I Need You” by Matt Maher has only 4 chords: G, C, Em, D, we can concentrate on other areas of guitar playing: 1. Confidence and Authenticity, 2. Connecting with the Song, and 3. Consistent Strumming.
My assignment was to upload my first take – the rules were that I couldn’t “rehearse” or try again for a better performance. This is an exercise in confidence (accepting that mistakes will be made and willing to share the imperfect me) and authenticity (no rehearsal means a raw self).
I also focused on connecting with the song and trying (and failing sometimes) to keep my strumming consistent. Sometimes a relatively easy song is nonetheless difficult for novice guitarists like me to play without mistakes because strumming consistently without slipping (skipping some of the strings or hitting extra ones), slowing or speeding up (when we aren’t supposed to), losing grip on the chord shape, and not keeping steady rhythm is still new.
Also new to me is playing electric guitar, when I started off playing only acoustic. But, even with all of that to think about, I was still caught up in the song lyrics and feeling what the song means to me personally. I also take heart in noticing that my guitar playing is improving.
