Today’s guitar practice is about playing my first electric guitar! If you’ve been following my progress in learning how to play the guitar, I’ve only been playing acoustic up until now. Today I’m on my new cherry red beautiful electric guitar (new to me, it was a used guitar – not too much competition for left-handed guitars, got a great deal on it!!!). In my previous blog post I shared my painting session, when I painted a lion on my new guitar earlier today. To prepare the guitar for painting on I had to remove many, many stickers! Fortunately, most of the stickers came off fairly easily.
Today’s practice is also about going back to easy beginner versions of songs that feature only 4 chords, so that the concentration is on emotion, passion, connecting with the song, and lifting the eyes off the frets more often. It’s hard to break the habit of looking at the neck of my guitar when I change chords, but I’m working on it.
It was challenging to play a new guitar that feels different and has a different neck shape, and yet still try to play familiar chords without looking down at my hands. These things come easily for those who’ve been playing the guitar for years, but if you’re a beginner like me, it’s something that will come gradually over time, with consistent practice. So never give up!
