One Day at a Time and Lenten Roses

A woman wearing a colorful shirt is passionately playing a green guitar while singing. Various musical instruments are visible in the background, along with paintings.

“One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus”, what a song! Some days I really need to sing these words! It was a crazy and stressful week. I had to report to jury duty yesterday in the busy historic metro area of Savannah, Georgia. I was “Juror 10” and seated front and center. But, after almost three hours of tension and waiting, the judge entered the jury holding area and told us that the criminal case had settled. Free to go home! I’m still on call for the rest of the week, so I’ll be checking in every evening to see if I have to report. I don’t have to report tomorrow, so that leaves only Thursday and Friday possible. In addition to jury duty, there were other stressful and very challenging issues. But, besides really feeling this song today, it’s a good choice for those of us who are beginners on the guitar. I’m finally showing you a song with more than 4 chords in it (G, C, D, Em, and now I’ve added A)!

I want to also direct your attention to the shirt I’m wearing – it’s my own design! The pattern is from my painting “Lenten Flower“. I became fascinated with this flower after researching it to paint floral Easter art a few years ago. I was wistful to find this plant and have these roses of my own one day – at the time we were in a transitional phase and renting, not knowing yet when or where we could have a home of our own again (I blogged about this in 2021). The thought of having these roses in my very own garden gave me hope. And here I am, with these roses in my home garden!

Since it is now the season of Lent, AND my lenten roses are in full bloom (hence the name of this type of flower, which I hear grows as a wildflower in places like Tennessee), it’s a good time to share my pretty blouse and my garden pictures with you! I just love this beautiful and unique flower! The blooms droop, so I had to take some of these pictures from below the plant.

These are what my Lenten Roses looked like a couple of weeks ago and they’re still in bloom today:

You might be able to tell from the angles of the other flowers that I took this picture from underneath the blooms. The next photo will show you more what I mean by this:

A cluster of pink and green flowers with prominent yellow centers, surrounded by lush green leaves, growing in a garden setting.

And even more so from farther away (notice also the buds that hadn’t yet bloomed, those are pretty too!):

A cluster of pink hellebore flowers surrounded by green leaves in a garden setting.

And this last photo is a different view of the flowers that shows off how they can be two-toned, or even color blocked, with purple and pink in the same flower. That’s (pink/purple) the inspiration for the flower of my oil painting and my shirt:

Lent is a time for reflection, and like spring in general, we can feel melancholy as we look back on things that didn’t go the way that we’d expected, losses we’ve experienced, hurts, and hardships. Maybe there’s something we wished had gone differently, bonds that are broken, spirits that are depleted, wounds that need healing. And in the midst of it all, there are beautiful surprises in nature – perfect, delicate, and vulnerable little flowers that somehow pop up and bring such joy! Nature, like music, can bring such hope! As winter begins its transition to spring, so might our souls be refreshed from darkness into Light. And for all of the spiritually cold days we still have ahead of us, may we say, “One day at a time, sweet Jesus”.

God bless you and keep you, this day and always.
