“I Believe in Santa”

“Christmas festivals are a tradition in Savannah and the surrounding areas. Celebrating the holiday season goes on for weeks with dance groups, arts and crafts, live music, food, dazzling displays on land and on water, and a glorious lighted Christmas parade. Of course, all good Christmas parades end with the arrival of Santa, which is why it’s the perfect ending for my book.

I believe in Santa Claus. Do you? When my son was little, he said, “I want to be Santa when I grow up.” He meant it. When he grew older he wanted to make toys with his father, who does beautiful woodworking of handcrafted instruments. I told him that when he was big enough to fill out the suit we’d buy him a professional Santa uniform. For him it’d be more than a costume, as he would be using it to work a vocation.

But even if he never really follows through with making toys and delivering them to children’s hospitals, assisted living facilities (to bring happy childhood memories to our oldest generation), or any other group who would feel loved by receiving an unconditional gift, it warms my heart to know that he has a passion for making others happy. And that’s all it takes to believe in Santa.

As we build our lives here in Savannah, I know we are in a special place, where people do still believe in goodness, tradition, and the importance of community. Here in the Deep South we may not have snow for Santa to park his sleigh, but if he knocks on the front door he’ll be let in, offered sweet tea or coffee, and given a plate of peach cookies. He’ll find a fully decked Christmas tree to leave his pile of goodies, but we won’t let him go without accepting a gift from us in return.”

“Savannah Snow”

“Our first winter in Savannah, it SNOWED! Snow in the Deep South is rare, but it does happen, and of course it happened shortly after we Northerners arrived. It would have been the first time in our lives that we had experienced a winter without snow, but wonders never cease, and the snowy streak continued. On January 04, 2018 the Coastal South was hit with more snowfall than nearly three decades.

Our son wanted snow for Christmas, as all of his childhood Christmases were snowy. The snowfall was an appreciated miracle that fell shortly after Christmas. Since then, we’ve not had snow again (yet), but if we ever miss the wintery white, it’s not far to go to the Carolina mountains to the family resorts that feature all the snowy fun we’d want.

I’m relieved to not have the worries that brutal winters burdened us with. I experienced ‘lake effect’ snow in upstate New York, where I was born and spent some of my childhood. The snow got so high that plows had to pile it into tremendous walls that were impossible to see over at intersections. I remember when the snow was packed so far up our front door that we were blocked in, and the snow blockade left an impression of the door on it. It was also snowy with occasional sub-zero blizzards, in Indiana, Wisconsin, and of course Minnesota. It even snowed when we lived in Ireland, which is somewhat rare, but naturally, for the one winter we were there, it snowed.”

“We Gather Together”

“What is the holiday season like in Savannah? What is Thanksgiving like? Wherever our home is, is where we gather together. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s pretty much the same, although there are some differences. There are more fireworks here, probably because the weather is mild. I’d love to see the ones that they show over Tybee Island on New Year’s. How exciting and beautiful that must be! But it will be hard for me to make the commitment to leave the house, because my favorite place to be for all of the major holidays is home, with my children and husband.

This painting is in a different style than I usually paint. It is meant to be representational, to allow you to imagine your own loved ones sitting around that table. It is, naturally, my own family, but I invite you to place yours there instead.

I look forward to this year’s holiday season, when it doesn’t really matter where we live, as the best part of the celebration is who we’re with. It’s hard when family members are missing due to temporary or permanent absence. I’ve lost both of my parents and many others as well. I think of them during the holidays, and I reach out to those who are facing their first Christmas without a loved one. We never know what tomorrow holds. Love is the most important thing, and it lives forever.

“God’s Promise”

“When we lived in Ireland, there were rainbows almost daily, including many glorious double rainbows. Here in coastal Georgia, we don’t get rainbows nearly as often, but more regularly than other places I’ve lived. It’s the humid coastal climate that produces them and I appreciate it every time.

This art was inspired by seeing a double rainbow from the van that seemed to follow us all the way home. Most of the time I saw it over forestry, like this, and that’s a similar view that I have from the house- which is where it ended up. On the way, people were on their phones or scowling, while at the red light. I wanted to say, “Look UP!” I was discouraged by how people were missing it.

Then, we stopped at the gas station and someone was out of their car to take pictures of the double rainbow. My hope was restored! We do still notice and appreciate God’s Promise. All we have to do is remember to look UP.

“This painting was inspired by live radar of Hurricane Irma. How fascinating to watch the storm as it moved over the ocean! Up North, I’d been through bitter life threatening cold of -25 actual temperature, not including wind chill, blizzards, tornadoes, and floods, but none of those were a shared experience world wide. When a hurricane comes, humanity watches in breathless anticipation, in awe of nature. It is a bonding experience, and seems everyone who’s been through a hurricane, even if only to evacuate from it, has their hurricane story that they love to tell.

I was worried that hurricanes would be a deal breaker for me down South, but everywhere I’ve ever lived, there has always been some type of dangerous weather. In fact, there were more episodes of dangerous weather in other places I’ve lived. At least with a hurricane, there is plenty of advance notice (usually- sometimes the forecasts are wrong about exact landfall or which levies may breech, tornadoes that spawn, etc.).

My point is, I no longer fear hurricanes. We can’t escape risks in life. I love living in coastal Georgia, and hurricanes are a risk I’m learning to live with. I’ve only evacuated from the threat of two of them, but each time, I felt a renewed gratitude for my community, my home, my family, and my God. Maybe that’s what storms are all about?”

“Peach Tree Hurricane”

“Hurricane Irma was my first hurricane. When we got evacuation orders, my husband was working the late shift as a pharmacy tech and he couldn’t leave until his shift was over. I was terrified, anxious we wouldn’t get out in time. I was so panicky that I tripped and fell in the shower while I was getting out. I injured my leg to the point that it was knotted up by the time my husband came home. I had to put ice on it the whole way to the hotel.

By the time we booked a hotel, it seemed all of Florida had already filled up every hotel room in the surrounding area. We had to drive five hours deep into Alabama, to a cockroach motel (literally!), where we were price-gouged and spent almost $1,000 for a few nights’ stay.

It wasn’t all bad- we found interesting things to do and made an “Evacucation” out of it. This year when we had to take another forced vacation during hurricane season, we almost looked forward to our Evacucation. We had even more fun than before, because we didn’t have to drive as far, were in a much better motel, and it wasn’t our first hurricane.

On the return home after Irma, we saw many peach trees down. It was sad to see the orchards ruined. But, soon after, we heard that they rebounded and all was well. Nature can be resilient, and it’s a reminder that we can be too. No matter how dark and dangerous the storm, the sun shines once again. “

“I mentioned earlier that we used to own a hobby farm. We had two little Babydoll Southdown lambs named George and Harry, after the Bailey brothers from “It’s a Wonderful Life”. They were sweet and lively. They loved playing hide and seek and chasing after pumpkins- that they’d then eat. We spoiled them with treats and they’d bleat for us to give them food or spend time with them.

One day, when my youngest was about seven years old, George- now a fully grown and heavy sheep- blocked the gate so that my daughter couldn’t leave the pasture. He hated when she was done playing and didn’t want her to go. He was stubborn and even treats weren’t enough to persuade him to move. I had to push and prod him from outside of the fence. Finally he resigned himself to her leaving and took the treats I offered.

When we moved down South, I didn’t expect to see this specific breed of sheep again, or any sheep really, but there are nearby family farms that raise Babydoll Southdown sheep and other breeds. Rural areas are less than an hour’s drive from the heart of Savannah metro.”

“Autumn Cottage”

“If Savannah, Georgia doesn’t bring this fantasy fall scene to mind, I understand. I thought of palm trees, sandy beaches, romantic Southern trees, and didn’t even know if the Deep South has a change of seasons. Well, they do. There are many trees that change color and drop leaves. It’s not as colorful as up North, but there’s definitely an autumn vibe.

Madrac Farms is only about fifteen minutes’ drive for me, and forty minutes from Savannah. If someone was looking for fall beauty right in Savannah, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens offers Autumn Gardenfest. There are also family pumpkin patches with corn mazes, duck races, pick-your-own pumpkin off the vine, and other autumn fun, thirty minutes to two hours’ drive. Some offer farm events like steer roping, cow milking, pony rides, and a mini zoo with donkeys and llamas.

There are also fall plants and flowers on display. Because the weather is still mostly warm- or even hot- there are many opportunities to decorate homes, doors, steps, yards, and storefronts with autumn displays. When the weather does get a bit cool in the evening, many people opt for a real or artificial fireplace instead of turning their heat on. So, this fanciful autumn cabin picture isn’t as far off for Savannah as we’d think.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, as I’ve always enjoyed fall. Up North, it sometimes snowed for Halloween and it was miserable for the kids to go trick or treating. Here, it was cool one year, and the next it was warm, but it was not so cold that the children had to wear winter coats over their costumes. My kids would have loved that!

Now too old for trick or treating, they help make it fun for the little ones who come to our door, by dressing up in fun costumes. When my daughter dressed up as Belle, several little girls were in awe – a “real” princess! It is nice to see community involvement and neighbors sitting out in chairs to keep an eye on the children. Fine weather makes a difference! Many years, parents never got out of their cars as they drove their frozen children door to door. So, while some may be wistful for colder crisper air, I’m plenty fine living in a place where cheerful flowers are still blooming while the pumpkins are ripe.

“Is it hard to find fall pumpkins in Savannah? Not at all! There are tent sales, grocery displays, and even pumpkin patches nearby. Madrac Farms in Rincon, Georgia, which is not far from the commuting town I live in, grows Orange Bulldog Pumpkins, developed by the University of Georgia to grow in the South Georgia climate.

When my kids were little, we took them to the pumpkin patch every year. I didn’t realize that families down South were doing the same thing. Of course it was often quite cold and wet when we’d bundle our kids up to freeze while hunting for the perfect pumpkin, but here it may be too hot, depending on the day. There are cool days during a Georgian October, and when those days pop up, it’s an ideal time to visit the pumpkin patches.”

“I made from-scratch mini cobblers with fresh Georgia peaches, and they were divine! But, sadly, I waited too late in the season to bake homemade pie. This was from the freezer section and all I had to do is pop it in the oven. I’ll make my own during next peach season.

When we have our own house, I want to plant peach trees. Our last year in Minnesota, we finally had mature apples on the trees we planted years prior. It was fun to eat them fresh and also bake homemade goodies. I look forward to doing this again, except this time with my favorite fruit- peaches!”
