“We get gators in the lagoon behind our house. Trapper John came out and removed a big alligator using a pole, his bare hands, and duct tape. I watched the adventure from inside the house, through the glass patio doors. When the gator was safely bound and loaded onto the back of his truck, I went outside and asked if it was OK to take pictures. Trapper John moved the gator so that I could get a good shot. The gator’s tail felt like an underinflated tire- rubbery, squishy, and oddly soft.

The police officer on the scene said- after I touched the gator- that he was surprised the alligator was being so docile. The officer was amused by my photo shoot. He said, “Welcome to Georgia.”

Besides gators, we also have snakes. There was a small one inside our house, which gave me a phobia of lying on the floor. No more yoga for me! There was a large one outside our house, which gave me a phobia of mowing the lawn. Now I wear boots or ask my husband to do it. One day I was filming a cute little toad and my husband pranked me by pretending to see a snake. He laughed about that for entirely too long. Well, a few weeks later, he came in from mowing with a sheepish look on his face. He thought I’d seen him jump a mile when he saw a snake in the grass. No, I’d missed that, but I can imagine it and it’s a safe bet that I’ll have another opportunity to see it.”

“Lighthouse near Tybee Island”

“My dad’s one and only painting in his life was of a lighthouse. Decades later, I was inspired to paint one, after seeing this lighthouse both from the road on the way to Tybee Island, and then later from the sea while on a dolphin boat tour.

This lighthouse is located two miles west of the tourist attraction, Tybee Island Lighthouse, and is actually on Cockspur Island. The first Cockspur Lighthouse was built in 1849 to mark the entrance to the south channel of the Savannah River. Because it wasn’t working adequately, it was later rebuilt in 1857. To preserve this historical marker, the lighthouse isn’t open to visitors.

What do you feel when you look at this painting? Hope, above a sea of unknown depth & profound sadness? Do we focus on what lies beneath, or look to the Light? Art says something different to me, depending on the moment, even if the painting is my own work. So, my answer to how this lighthouse makes me feel will be different depending at where I am in life’s journey, or what my mood is at that time.”

“My Kids at the Beach”

“For me, this painting is sweet & happy. It is the memory of a special day- my son and youngest daughter at the beach on Tybee Island. It was just a few days after we moved here, before we were even fully unpacked. We were trying to fit in a short family vacation before my husband started his new job.It was the first time we visited what would soon become our favorite place. We had been through a very difficult and prolonged chapter of loss. But all of that felt so far away when looking at the vast ocean, the waters meeting the sky, in endless light and color. The birds, without a care in the world, flew and walked among us, pulling us into their world. Nothing mattered but that moment of pure joy.

It’s been over two years since that day, and I still feel the same every time I see the ocean. I can’t imagine ever living far from the sea ever again. When I was a small child, my favorite song was “Puff the Magic Dragon” who lived by the sea. I’d never seen the ocean, and thought it was a magical place I’d maybe never see, let alone be privileged to live by. It took me much longer than I would have liked to settle in the right place, but I am finally where I belong.

“Fungie the Dolphin”

“This very playful and marvelous creature is a dolphin named Fungie. I met him on a boat tour in Dingle, Ireland. He loves showing off for people. He is quite a character, well loved by locals and tourists. Delightful! The Irish are hilarious. As it turns out there’s only ONE dolphin to see on the Celtic Sea dolphin tour. They literally meant “dolphin” tour. Fungie got lost one day and now lives there.

I was living in Ireland in 2016 with the hope of staying for at least a year. Unfortunately I had to cancel my art show because I couldn’t get a “permission to remain” visa. I was sad about this, as it had taken a lot of time and effort to make the art show happen, and my family had our hearts set on staying. Two of my children had received scholarships for the university in Cork.We’d also never lived near the sea before, and it was a healing and life-changing experience. Seeing Fungie was my first time seeing a dolphin in the wild, which was my dream come true! So, when we returned to the Midwestern United States, land-locked, and ocean-less, I didn’t know when or if I’d ever see another dolphin outside of a zoo.

God moves in mysterious ways, and a little over a year later, I was on another dolphin tour, on an ocean that… if we could see clear through to the other shore, we could almost see Ireland. On the Tybee Island dolphin tour, I saw several dolphins, not just one. They usually traveled in pairs and chased the boat. I’ve also seen dolphins while at the beach. I love dolphins so very much. The excitement from seeing them never dims.

“Living Sand Dollar”

“I saw this living sand dollar in the touch pool at the Marine Science Center, but I’ve also seen many sand dollars at the beach. The living ones are dark and pop through the sand during low tide. We are not meant to take those, as removing them from the ocean will kill these special creatures. One time I saw a woman with a full bucket of living sand dollars and I felt grief stricken. But, when a sand dollar is light and dry (bone white and brittle, or turning that way), it is no longer living, and may be collected as a wonderful beach treasure souvenir.

The sand dollar is a fascinating simple sea creature with markings that have deeply religious and spiritual meaning for many Christians, and are especially meaningful at Easter. There are markings on the front and back, and “doves” inside (discovered only when a sand dollar is broken open).For many, the sand dollar represents the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1. Five slits in a configuration may represent Christ’s wounds while on the cross

2. Markings look like an Easter lily with a star in the middle, symbolizing the birth of Christ

3. On the opposite side is an outline of a poinsettia, or Easter lily

4. Tiny doves of peace and hope are inside (white bird shapes that were once the sand dollar’s teeth)

Besides all of this, sand dollars are special to me because my dad brought one home to me when I was a child. He had been to Savannah for a military training exercise and had found the sand dollar on the beach. He told me that I needed to go one day, that I would love it. Dad died from cancer at age thirty-seven, after having beat it once before when in his twenties. He had served two tours in the Vietnam War. I had recently turned sixteen years old when he died. Many years later, I not only got to visit Savannah, but I now live here, and hope to make it my forever home.

When I found my first sand dollar on the beach, I held it up to the sky and said, “This is for you, Dad.” Without the memory of the sand dollar and his words to me, my family wouldn’t have thought to consider Savannah as our wonderful home. We have a beautiful future here, and I thank Dad for that.

“Savannah has a thriving art community. SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) is responsible for many art related events, activities, exhibits, and city installations. Savannah has several museums that showcase art, or are wholly devoted to art. Additionally, the architecture, rich history, and flowing Spanish moss landscape of the area makes the city itself a work of art.

The coastal areas also offer a palette of warm colors, and sea creatures that inspire artists to paint them. Colorful birds, peaceful turtles, and dangerous reptiles energize the scene. While classes and workshops are available, one does not necessarily need to be taught how to paint. Painting comes from the heart.

Art is a language that communicates what we find hard to put into words- from our deepest quietest joy, to our darkest most profound sadness. When I communicate through paint, my language is then interpreted by you, and it now belongs to you. I am grateful and truly honored to be a part of a shared human experience.”

“Savannah loves music. Live music is a vibrant part of the city’s lifestyle, from the famous to the new, Savannah offers concerts, festivals and even small gatherings in homes. Churches also offer a variety of music, from traditional organ and piano hymn arrangements, to contemporary songs featuring electric instruments from drums to guitars. Celtic, African and Indian instruments make appearances as well.

My son saw a flyer on his college campus for a local in-home gathering. He brought his guitar. My husband and I attended with him and were among the youngest people there. The musicians were incredible! Their life and musical experiences were rich indeed. We sang together and felt as if we participated in an intimate concert with professional artists- a priceless experience!

My son has also had the opportunity to play at church. I was especially happy when he played “How Great Thou Art” on harmonica while my daughters and I sang. I’ve played my mountain dulcimer and keyboard, but I don’t play either particularly well. I mostly sing with the choir. Our playing ability isn’t what’s important though- it’s about enjoying live music in the company of people we share our home city with.”

“I can’t do a book about Georgia without giving mention to the Dawgs. The University of Georgia Bulldogs, a popular football team, has a mascot named Uga (abbreviation for University of GA). Uga, and previous mascots, were/are bred and residing here in Savannah. I painted an English bulldog in general. Uga is a white dog with a friendlier face.

My next door neighbor flies the team flag from his porch. Many locals show team spirit via bumper stickers on their cars, hats, clothes, and other items. Chief rivals are teams from neighboring states, Alabama and Florida. When a popular game is on television, our neighborhood smells like meat on the grill and cars line the streets for home viewing parties.”

“The Steamship Savannah was the first ship to cross the Atlantic by steam. What a happy, exhilarating feeling it must have been to stand on the shores, watching this pioneering ship set sail. May the spirit of discovery be our future!

This painting celebrates the American independent spirit. Our beautiful flag had fewer stars then, as we were a new country full of hope and innovation. When anything is possible, everything is. May we be inspired by those who took this maiden voyage and showed us how to dream and achieve.”

“House in Savannah”

“This house is near Forysth Park, the park with the iconic fountain featured in the previous artwork (Natalie at the Fountain). Most homes in the neighborhoods near the park are partially hidden by Savannah’s signature trees and Spanish moss. Many properties carry the greenery further with shrubbery, vines, and evergreens near, or even on, their homes. Window boxes contain large floral arrangements and topiaries.

Besides color and movement from the lush vegetation, the historic architecture in the area is artistic and flowing. Exterior iron spiral staircases, ornate fencing, spirals, angles, curved windows, and levels create a peaceful, yet intriguing, experience. There is a small town neighborhood feeling even in the heart of the Savannah metro area.
