“Is it hard to find fall pumpkins in Savannah? Not at all! There are tent sales, grocery displays, and even pumpkin patches nearby. Madrac Farms in Rincon, Georgia, which is not far from the commuting town I live in, grows Orange Bulldog Pumpkins, developed by the University of Georgia to grow in the South Georgia climate.

Madrac Farms is only about fifteen minutes’ drive for me, and forty minutes from Savannah. If someone was looking for fall beauty right in Savannah, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens offers Autumn Gardenfest. There are also family pumpkin patches with corn mazes, duck races, pick-your-own pumpkin off the vine, and other autumn fun, thirty minutes to two hours’ drive. Some offer farm events like steer roping, cow milking, pony rides, and a mini zoo with donkeys and llamas.

When my kids were little, we took them to the pumpkin patch every year. I didn’t realize that families down South were doing the same thing. Of course it was often quite cold and wet when we’d bundle our kids up to freeze while hunting for the perfect pumpkin, but here it may be too hot, depending on the day. There are cool days during a Georgian October, and when those days pop up, it’s an ideal time to visit the pumpkin patches.”

“I made from-scratch mini cobblers with fresh Georgia peaches, and they were divine! But, sadly, I waited too late in the season to bake homemade pie. This was from the freezer section and all I had to do is pop it in the oven. I’ll make my own during next peach season.

When we have our own house, I want to plant peach trees. Our last year in Minnesota, we finally had mature apples on the trees we planted years prior. It was fun to eat them fresh and also bake homemade goodies. I look forward to doing this again, except this time with my favorite fruit- peaches!”

This one makes nice kitchen art – warm and inviting, to inspire happy memories of good cooking

“Peach Cookies”

“When the company my husband worked for moved to Canada, we were faced with an involuntary career change. What would he do? Well, that story would take a long time to tell, so I’ll move quickly to the part where we landed in Savannah, Georgia, where he took pre-pharmacy classes at Georgia Southern University. It took two years to catch up on prerequisites he didn’t have, and meanwhile he was attending college with our kids.

But, after he finished, he was- with great relief- easily accepted into pharmacy school at South University, also here in Savannah. Shortly after he was accepted, he received a small gift box in the mail from South. It was a welcome treat of Byrd’s famous peach cookies, a Savannah cookie company established in 1924.

He shared the cookies with our family, and I was enchanted by the tiny powdered sugar covered treats. So, for my birthday, he gave me a gift tin of Byrd’s cookies. I painted what was left of them, after I’d already eaten quite a few!

I was checking just now to make sure I got the 1924 date right, and I saw that Byrd Cookie Company has new treats and gift items. They have a website, but since I live here, we can make time to pop into their store. My husband went there without me to shop for my birthday, so I’ve not been there yet. On my list!”

“Peaches in a Bowl”

“Georgia peaches are genuinely loved in this state. Peaches are everywhere- on license plates, on signs, and at roadside stands (when in season). There’s peach tea, pie, cookies, cobblers and of course the peaches as they are. They are a pretty fruit and incredibly juicy. Peaches happen to be my favorite fruit, so I’m in luck here in Savannah!

This oil painting is of bona fide Georgia peaches in one of our bowls. My daughter said it was strange to see our bowl on my easel, as it was nearly life sized to the exact bowls we had nearby in the kitchen. There could have been more peaches to paint, but I ate them!”
