Guitar and painting journey continues with “How Great thou Art”

This song is another 4 chord wonder. I’m learning more chords, but as those are bit stumbly yet, I’ll share more advanced songs in the near future. This week I’m playing around with creative rhythms, and making a song my own unique cover. I’m also playing a song that is personally very meaningful to me, that I have a long history with.

I want to share a little story: last year I was volunteering at a nursing home and a lady, who struggled to remember names of family and friends, could remember every word of this song “How Great thou Art”! As tears rolled down her face, I had trouble singing to the end, so emotional was this. When the song ended, I told her she was beautiful and touched her cheek. She fell to sleep and we quietly left her room. It felt like an invasion of privacy to look at her peaceful face, so we left quickly, and it was like a hush was over us; we didn’t say anything for quite some time.

How powerful music is! And even though I just started playing guitar, I can already see how playing an instrument makes these songs even more powerful. I’m amazed at how happy this experience is! I love playing guitar! I will improve over time, and I hope you stick with me on this joyful journey – it motivates me to keep going when I know someone is waiting for an update and maybe even learning guitar too! (Remember, I play left-handed, so if you are also learning to play, it might be helpful seeing a mirror image to play along with)

And here’s an update on the progress of my oil painting of a guitar (of my own guitar, as I’m sure you’ve guessed!)

I’ve not yet decided how detailed I want to get with it, as I might lose the “art” look and turn it too much into photo realism, but I love my guitar and I find myself wanted to get it closer and closer to how it looks in real life.

Before I wrap up this post I wanted to say a little bit more about the song “How Great thou Art”. This is one of the songs I sing when I’m outside enjoying the many wild song birds that make our yard their home. The birds interact with me before and while I sing. Bird families have raised their babies in the birdhouse and nests in trees around our home, so they’ve grown up very familiar and safe around me, as I come and go often to work on my garden, or to take a little fitness walk. They will call out to me and if I don’t give them attention fast enough, they’ll get louder and more insistent. There’s a cardinal who is especially demanding if I don’t talk to him when he chirps for me!

But it’s the bluebirds who wait for me to sing. They will perch all around me, often about six or seven of them at a time. I think most are juveniles, and two are adults, possibly different birds on different days, as we have multiple bluebird families who have made our home theirs as well. “How Great thou Art” is a beautiful song to sing while in nature and communicating with God’s special creatures, and observing nature. I love the reference to sky and thunder, and have sung this song when dark clouds are rolling in, or the sky is starting to fill with stars. It seems to be a favorite of our bird friends also.
