“My Kids at the Beach”

“For me, this painting is sweet & happy. It is the memory of a special day- my son and youngest daughter at the beach on Tybee Island. It was just a few days after we moved here, before we were even fully unpacked. We were trying to fit in a short family vacation before my husband started his new job.It was the first time we visited what would soon become our favorite place. We had been through a very difficult and prolonged chapter of loss. But all of that felt so far away when looking at the vast ocean, the waters meeting the sky, in endless light and color. The birds, without a care in the world, flew and walked among us, pulling us into their world. Nothing mattered but that moment of pure joy.

It’s been over two years since that day, and I still feel the same every time I see the ocean. I can’t imagine ever living far from the sea ever again. When I was a small child, my favorite song was “Puff the Magic Dragon” who lived by the sea. I’d never seen the ocean, and thought it was a magical place I’d maybe never see, let alone be privileged to live by. It took me much longer than I would have liked to settle in the right place, but I am finally where I belong.

“Flag on Tybee Island”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“This is a special roadside American flag on the only way to/from Tybee Island. It was saved from flood waters by police officers after Hurricane Irma, on the anniversary of 9/11 known as Patriots Day. The flag, attached to driftwood, had been a familiar landmark on that stretch of Highway 80 since the 1980’s. The officers knew that evacuees returning home after Hurricane Irma would find their beloved flag to be a comforting sight. They were especially grateful to residents who took care of the weary officers with coffee and encouragement, while first responders were working 12 hour shifts before and after the storm.

I had no idea of the history of this roadside flag when I was inspired to paint it. All I saw was our homeland’s flag waving on that stretch of highway, and I was stirred with emotion. I imagined someone had put that there with love and passion for our country and our people. It was only later that I learned about the story behind this flag. Now it is even more special and I’m happy to have painted it.

“Angel Releasing Dove”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“I used treasures I found at the beach on Tybee Island for this oil painting. I imagined broken shell pieces as angel wings, and added white paint to those, to give them more texture. The dove the angel is releasing is a “dove” from inside a sand dollar. I left that unpainted. I glued the objects onto the canvas and then painted the scene around them.”

“Fungie the Dolphin”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“This very playful and marvelous creature is a dolphin named Fungie. I met him on a boat tour in Dingle, Ireland. He loves showing off for people. He is quite a character, well loved by locals and tourists. Delightful! The Irish are hilarious. As it turns out there’s only ONE dolphin to see on the Celtic Sea dolphin tour. They literally meant “dolphin” tour. Fungie got lost one day and now lives there.

I was living in Ireland in 2016 with the hope of staying for at least a year. Unfortunately I had to cancel my art show because I couldn’t get a “permission to remain” visa. I was sad about this, as it had taken a lot of time and effort to make the art show happen, and my family had our hearts set on staying. Two of my children had received scholarships for the university in Cork. We’d also never lived near the sea before, and it was a healing and life-changing experience. Seeing Fungie was my first time seeing a dolphin in the wild, which was my dream come true! So, when we returned to the Midwestern United States, land-locked, and ocean-less, I didn’t know when or if I’d ever see another dolphin outside of a zoo.

God moves in mysterious ways, and a little over a year later, I was on another dolphin tour, on an ocean that… if we could see clear through to the other shore, we could almost see Ireland. On the Tybee Island dolphin tour, I saw several dolphins, not just one. They usually traveled in pairs and chased the boat. I’ve also seen dolphins while at the beach. I love dolphins so very much. The excitement from seeing them never dims.

“Matthew the Sea Turtle”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“Matthew is an animal rescue. Much loved at Tybee Island Marine Science Center, but eventually it was time to say goodbye. He became healthy and ready to return. His laid back and lovable personality won the hearts of everyone. He’s since been released back into the ocean, where he no doubt continues to groove on.

Meanwhile, new animals are continuously rescued and nurtured until they can be returned to their natural habitats. The Marine Science Center has a gift shop with many interesting finds, as well as a small museum to see sea creatures, and learn about the animals and the ocean.”

“Living Sand Dollar”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“I saw this living sand dollar in the touch pool at the Marine Science Center, but I’ve also seen many sand dollars at the beach. The living ones are dark and pop through the sand during low tide. We are not meant to take those, as removing them from the ocean will kill these special creatures. One time I saw a woman with a full bucket of living sand dollars and I felt grief stricken. But, when a sand dollar is light and dry (bone white and brittle, or turning that way), it is no longer living, and may be collected as a wonderful beach treasure souvenir.

The sand dollar is a fascinating simple sea creature with markings that have deeply religious and spiritual meaning for many Christians, and are especially meaningful at Easter. There are markings on the front and back, and “doves” inside (discovered only when a sand dollar is broken open). For many, the sand dollar represents the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1. Five slits in a configuration may represent Christ’s wounds while on the cross

2. Markings look like an Easter lily with a star in the middle, symbolizing the birth of Christ

3. On the opposite side is an outline of a poinsettia, or Easter lily

4. Tiny doves of peace and hope are inside (white bird shapes that were once the sand dollar’s teeth)

Besides all of this, sand dollars are special to me because my dad brought one home to me when I was a child. He had been to Savannah for a military training exercise and had found the sand dollar on the beach. He told me that I needed to go one day, that I would love it. Dad died from cancer at age thirty-seven, after having beat it once before when in his twenties. He had served two tours in the Vietnam War. I had recently turned sixteen years old when he died. Many years later, I not only got to visit Savannah, but I now live here, and hope to make it my forever home.

When I found my first sand dollar on the beach, I held it up to the sky and said, “This is for you, Dad.” Without the memory of the sand dollar and his words to me, my family wouldn’t have thought to consider Savannah as our wonderful home. We have a beautiful future here, and I thank Dad for that.

“I Love Life”

I Love Life oil painting by Natalie Buske Thomas

“My favorite place to go is the beach at Tybee Island. One day, we saw this happy graffiti on the pier. I was inspired to paint it – and photographed it to remember for later. When I was taking the picture, I saw a shadow in my shot. My daughter was taking a picture at that same moment, also of the words “I Love Life” painted on the pier. It’s warm fuzzy spontaneous times like these that are what makes life so wonderful.

Small piers carry beach-goers from the parking lot and sidewalks, over the rough sandy terrain to the smooth beachfront. The large pier at Tybee is home to food stands, music, fishing, and surveying the ocean. It is also a striking visual marker for finding one’s way back to the parking areas by the main public beach entrance. Under the pier, sometimes people hang hammocks and relax in the shade.

Sea birds like to gather on the pier. Abundant life, energy, and motion creates a beach community and instant bonding experience. Beachcombers search for treasures on cooler days. On hot days, people prefer to swim or sunbathe. All year round, people are playful- bringing kites, fishing poles, frisbees, volleyballs, pool noodles, swim floats, kickboards, surfboards, kayaks, and more. The sun shines often on Tybee, and it always feels like a blessing from God.

“Painting Colors”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“Savannah has a thriving art community. SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) is responsible for many art related events, activities, exhibits, and city installations. Savannah has several museums that showcase art, or are wholly devoted to art. Additionally, the architecture, rich history, and flowing Spanish moss landscape of the area makes the city itself a work of art.

The coastal areas also offer a palette of warm colors, and sea creatures that inspire artists to paint them. Colorful birds, peaceful turtles, and dangerous reptiles energize the scene. While classes and workshops are available, one does not necessarily need to be taught how to paint. Painting comes from the heart.

Art is a language that communicates what we find hard to put into words- from our deepest quietest joy, to our darkest most profound sadness. When I communicate through paint, my language is then interpreted by you, and it now belongs to you. I am grateful and truly honored to be a part of a shared human experience.”

“Boiled Peanuts for Sale”

Watch Natalie paint this art, and all 50 oil paintings in this collection (menu below)

“Vendors in and around the city of Savannah sell food by the roadside, sometimes from the back of a pickup truck. Boiled peanuts are a traditional offering, but also seasonal fruits or vegetables like watermelon, tomatoes, and of course- Georgia grown peaches. I didn’t know what a boiled peanut was, and it’s an acquired taste in my opinion, but I’m not a fan of legumes in general so don’t take my word for it. My husband likes boiled peanuts and enjoys the spicy seasoned ones as well.

Some stands are permanent or semi-permanent structures, especially further out from the city, like on the way to Tybee Island. Stands usually have more to offer and change things up seasonally. Their signage is fun and plays well with both tourists and locals. Some stands also sell seafood, or have a physical store behind their stand or table.

Even on extremely hot days, roadside food sales are open for business. There’s something warmly traditional and American about this dedication to commerce. One man had attached six American flags to the bed of his old Chevy pickup truck, selling boiled peanuts from a table he’d set up in front of the tailgate.”

“Autumn Angel”

“Bonaventure Cemetery was made famous when one of its sculptures, a statue known as “Bird Girl”, was featured as a book cover and in the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. The statue was such an attraction that it needed to be removed to preserve it from the many hands of tourists, and damage from vandals as well. It was relocated to the art museum (Telfair Museums’ Telfair Academy), where I was able to view it.

Angel statues in the historic Savannah cemeteries inspired me to paint an angel in a similar pose and style to the stone sculptures. My angel is in full color with a fantasy landscape, as if giving life to what was cold and dead. As fall represents death, yet contradicts itself in color, forecasting an impending stillness, yet change, visiting the memorials felt much like the changing of seasons. There was peace and beauty, yet bittersweet, as endings and loss permeate the grounds.”

When believing in life after death, we are sustained by the hope of a joyous reunion with the people we love. They are with us, as family is forever. We see them in the faces and spirits of the new generations. They are with us in our memories, in the songs of our time, in the art that we see, and the nature that holds us dear. May God keep you strong in your times of grief and loss, bless you with healing closure, and grant you peace.
