Watch Natalie paint “Dragon” in less than a minute, via this time-lapse video.
I painted this dragon as a thank you gift for my friend who is a pediatric ER doctor. That’s why the tail is shaped like the symbol for medicine- the Caduceus (a symbol with murky roots, but nonetheless widely accepted to represent the medical profession). The dragon’s wild mane represents my friend’s hair, which she dyes purple. The “M” that the dragon is perched on is her first initial. She collects dragon figures and was tickled to see herself “as a dragon”. This art is framed and displayed on the wall next to the glass curio that holds her dragons.
“Dragon” is included in the collection “50 Oil Paintings Inspired by Nature“, referencing fantasy and mythical creatures in the chapter titled Exotic and Unusual. It seems no matter how many thousands of species of truly interesting and beautiful animals on this planet, people still enjoy creating new ones in their imaginations.
