From Natalie: “This art is an imaginary scene. I’ll repeat what I said about the painting ‘Kitchen Devotions‘: ‘…this was an interesting experiment that I push myself to do occasionally (paint from my imagination, without a plan or anything to look at for a reference). This kind of painting is freeing and often results in something quite original.’ For ‘Dove in a Forest’, I created a rather odd collage of images to look at. I wanted to make sure I got the basic anatomy of the dove represented enough as to be recognizable as that type of bird, rather than just a white bird in general. The forest and path took off on their own. I didn’t allow myself to overthink where to put the dove, or make any fretful plans. I painted while listening to music, and let all worries go. I trusted that the painting would become whatever it was meant to be, and maybe I wouldn’t even show anyone. Well, of all my paintings, this is the one that spoke deeply to a friend of mine. This was the first print I ever sold. I will post a picture she sent me of this art in a frame in her home. Letting go, trusting… I wasn’t sure what this painting was meant to be about. Peace? Lately I’ve been feeling this phrase attached to it: ‘Holy Spirit, You are Welcome Here.’ But, art is a language that you interpret on your own. If I have to translate for you, I’ve not communicated well. Whatever it means to you, is what it means. God bless you.”
