This video begins with a few tips and reminders (to read on the screen), followed by a demonstration of different ways to play. Just take it nice and slow. Try each method until you find one that you like. Before long, you’ll be able to play faster and you’ll be able to experiment more with different techniques. Good luck, and enjoy!

This next video is an example of how to play around with the dulcimer when you are ready to try freestyling. These are my kids when they were younger, just messing around. What they’re playing is something they made up themselves, and they aren’t playing it perfectly, but it’s a great example of having fun with the dulcimer. My daughter now plays violin and piano, and my son plays guitar. You never know where dabbling will lead. Don’t be afraid to have fun and make mistakes.

Last, I’d like to encourage you to look at professional dulcimer players’ videos. I typed “mountain dulcimer” into the search box on YouTube and I found many wonderful examples of expert musicians!
